According to the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Ben Nunoo Mensah, Ghana may send athletes who are qualified for this year’s Olympics only if funding is made available.

Through universality qualification, Abeiku and another female swimmer and the aquatic team will probably make it to the Olympic Games.

However, Ben Nunoo Mensah discussed, in an interview with Akoma FM, the likelihood of Ghana producing a qualified athlete for the Olympics.

“Our boxers can still qualify if we as a country raise funds to support their trip to Thailand in mid-May, where they will fight and most likely qualify,” he said.

Mr. Nunoo Mensah is worried if funds are not made available, the country could miss the chance.

“However, we will not send any qualified athletes to the Olympics unless funds are made available. In our competition, the GOC paid for the boxers to travel to Senegal and Italy, but our resources are now limited, and it is not our primary responsibility to look after the national teams.”

The President of the GOC is appealing to the media to push the Sports Ministry for the funds.

“The Sports Ministry has promised to sponsor the boxers, but we would appreciate it if the media could push them so that we can have them as they did with the Queens.”

The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and commonly known as Paris 2024, is an upcoming international multi-sport event scheduled to take place from Friday, July 26 to Sunday, August 11.

“If we are able to secure funding for our boxers’ trip, I have every confidence that their story will be told differently this time.”
