Findings received by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, show that 1,328 out of about 2,500 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana which have been locked-up at Tema Port could not be traced.
John Abdulai Jinapor emphasized that the issue would not be left hanging, but would be dealt with appropriate interventions by the security service and other stakeholders to bring perpetrators to book.
“We would not relent on our efforts to ascertain the truth behind the missing containers. Anyone one involved in this issue will face the full rigours of the law”, the energy Minister stressed.
He also mentioned that ECG’s procurement processes would be changed without hesitation.
The technical committee led by Professor Innocent Senyo Kwasi Acquah presented the report stating that consistent procurements made by ECG for some time now were overdone by an increment of 700 percent.
“Most procurements were done without competitive methods. Two companies were handpicked to help clear the containers at the Port, yet the containers are still stuck at the Tema Port”, Professor Innocent Senyo Kwasi Akwa further added.
According to Professor Acquah, while ECG officials cited insufficient funds as a reason for the containers’ prolonged detention, more procurements were being made for other contracts and projects.
About two months ago, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Mr John Abdulai Jinapor, tasked a 5-member investigative committee to oversee all procurement practices at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The move was aimed at addressing the inefficiencies that have led to significant financial losses to the company and the energy sector in general.
