The Central Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Emmanuel Kwesi Mensah Dawood, has said 18 people have lost their lives in the region following the downpour between Friday, June 19, and Sunday, June 21, 2026.
The three-day continuous rainfall also saw the collapse of 58 buildings affecting 8,921 individuals.
Speaking to the media at a press briefing at the Ekon Community, one of the disaster sites on Monday, June 22, Mr. Dawood revealed that 13 out of the 23 districts in the region were affected by the rains, adding that the Cape Coast Metropolis recorded the highest number of the fatalities with 6 deaths.
He revealed further that over 370 persons have been internally displaced as a result of the floods.
“Now, there are 8,921 flood victims, there are 377 internally displaced persons as a result of the 58 building collapses, as well as families of those the fatalities were recorded.
“So far we have recorded 18 fatalities. Cape Coast alone has six, 5 from building collapses, one from drowning incidents,” he disclosed.
Detailing the causes of the deaths, he said; “these 18 fatalities are as a result of building collapses, drowning, mudslides, falling trees and other unfortunate incidents.”
He reiterated the severity of the damage caused, appealing for humanitarian support to cater for those affected.
“18 souls have been lost sadly. So we appeal for humanitarian support in the form of food items, maize, rice, gari beans, cooking oil, canned fish, non-food items, like sweetened mattresses, polymaths, blankets, used clothing for the children, hygiene kits for adolescent girls. We are looking at building materials, roofing sheets for the raised or affected victims, roofing nails.”
“We are also appealing for essential medical supplies, especially aquatabs for water purification, anti-malaria medications, which are basically OTC, and then importantly educational support,” he added.
Mr. Dawood also issued an urgent evacuation order, stating that anyone who has built houses in water-prone areas must evacuate within two weeks to avoid future casualties.
