The outcome of the 2020 general election was a message from Ghanaians to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that wasn’t heeded by the party, according to Francis Addai-Nimoh, a 2024 flag bearer aspirant.
Addai-Nimoh, a former Member of Parliament for Mampong, was speaking with JB on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, when he said the drop in the party’s votes was a clear message the leadership ignored.
According to him, the NPP’s performance in 2016 compared to the 2020 polls pointed to the fact that Ghanaians were not pleased with Akufo-Addo’s leadership but decided to give the party another chance, hoping the four years weren’t enough to build the nation as expected.
However, instead of taking lessons from the outcome, he noted that the party continued to mismanage the economy, leading to the defeat they suffered in the last general elections.
“The outcome of the 2020 results should have told us that the faith Ghanaians gave us had dwindled. In 2016, we had 169 seats but reduced to 137 in 2020. The NDC had 106 seats but increased to 137. They gained 31 seats and we lost 31 seats. We should have taken a cue from the 2020 elections to prepare for 2024 but we didn’t,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the difference between the presidential votes for the NPP and NDC in 2016 and 2020 was also significant, which, according to Mr. Addai-Nimoh, should have served as a lesson for the party to regroup and prepare better.

Based on the party’s performance in the last election, Mr. Addai-Nimoh is asserting that the NPP leadership should have resigned on principle. He says a leader who fails on his mandate steps out by principle, something the NPP national executives ought to have done after losing the polls.
