The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has written to the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament to respond to some revelations during sitting on Monday.
According to Professor Amin Alhassan, it has become necessary to clear the air because of some two responses given by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif.
“It is important to clear that GBC was the official broadcaster but not responsible for the technical production of the Games.
“The technical production was outsourced as GBC did not have the equipment to produce the Games,” Prof Alhassan said in the letter to the Committee.
There was also a question of the payment of $3 million to the national broadcaster for its coverage.
“Of the total payments made for the Games, GBC was only entitled to One Hundred and Five Thousand US Dollars (USD 105,000.00).
“Therefore, the statement that GBC was paid ‘in excess of three million US dollars’ comes as a surprise.”
The GBC DG also noted that as far as he is concerned, there are no outstanding payments to be made as all staff employed for the Games have been duly paid.
This was a direct response to concerns from the Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament (MP), Sam Nartey George, that “most of the technicians who worked on the African Games have still not been paid”.
