For the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to properly rebuild to come stronger in the 2028 elections, it would be in their interest for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to voluntarily opt out of the race.

The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, who is making the assertion is contending that rather than being pushed to step aside, the party should allow the former Vice President take that decision himself.

He explains that the challenges surrounding Dr. Bawumia that contributed to the NPP’s defeat is systemic, and when he steps aside voluntarily, it will help the party to begin its rebuilding process early without him.

“It will be in the best interest of the NPP if Bawumia voluntarily decides not to run again, rather than being pushed. If he makes that decision, the NPP can begin the rebuilding process earlier without him, because the issues he brings are systemic,” he has said on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

The NPP, following its abysmal performance in the December 2024 general elections, formed a committee in January 2025 to review its performance in the contest.

Its National Chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, at the press conference, acknowledged that the party performed woefully at the polls.

The Electoral Commission’s official results which excluded nine constituencies at the time had John Dramani Mahama, the candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), winning with 6,328,397 votes (56.55 per cent of valid votes), with Dr. Bawumia of the NPP, receiving 4,657,304 votes (41.61 per cent).

“We were very hopeful and positive, and our aim was to secure an emphatic victory at the polls. And we went very hard at it. As a party, we put in our best efforts in the campaign. I commend all members of the various campaign teams of the party, from polling stations to the national level, who also put in their very best in the competition,” Mr Ntim said.

“There is no doubt that the outcome of the election was not what we hoped for. We may not have won the battle, but we haven’t lost the war on the quest for a better Ghana, shaped by the ideals and philosophies of the New Patriotic Party.”

“The party will, in January 2025, set up an effective and objective election review committee to take a post-mortem into the outcome of the election,” he added.
