A 24-year-old woman, Mawuena Tamakloe, has been sentenced by an Accra Circuit Court to 12 months imprisonment for stealing a 50-inch television (TV) at the Teshie Military Barracks in Accra.
The convict pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing, involving the TV valued at GH¢8,900.00.
She was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment each on the charges of unlawful entry and stealing, to be served concurrently.
Chief Inspector Clemence Takyi, prosecuting the matter, told the court that the convict had requested a pregnancy test, which turned out to be negative. He added that Mawuena escaped when they were returning to the police station after the test.
The case investigator told the court that Mawuena crossed the main road close to the police station and hopped into a commercial vehicle and then a taxi.
The female case investigator said Mawuena was rearrested after a rider offered to help by chasing the two vehicles she had hidden in. The presiding judge then advised Mawuena to go and reform in prison.
Chief Inspector Takyi had earlier prayed the court to withdraw the charge of causing unlawful damage to the TV, a property of the Church of Pentecost (COP) Whistler Barracks Worship Centre.
The court had earlier entered a plea of not guilty on the charge of causing unlawful damage after the convict had offered some explanation.
The court, presided over by Susan Edufful, in handing down the sentence, took into consideration the age of the accused, being a first-time offender, her plea for leniency, and the value of the item.
Earlier, the prosecution told the court that the complainant, Ebenezer Oppong Aboagye, was an Elder of the COP, Whistler Barracks Worship Centre within the Teshie Military Academy, while Mawuena, unemployed, was a resident of Tema Community 2.
The prosecution explained that on May 15, 2025, at about 8:30 a.m., Mawuena was spotted by military officers, who were witnesses in the case, carrying a 50-inch Hisense UHD 4K flat-screen TV out of the Military Academy Barracks, specifically from the COP, Whistler Barracks Worship Centre direction, with the church’s inscription on the TV box.
Mawuena was handed over to the military police for further interrogation. When questioned by the officers, she couldn’t provide a convincing explanation, the prosecution told the court.
She later confessed that she had stolen the TV from one of the offices inside the church auditorium during questioning. The prosecution said the complainant was informed, and Mawuena was handed over to the police along with the TV for further action.
The prosecutor told the court that the police personnel, accompanied by the complainant and the convict, visited the church and discovered that the inner wooden door to the head pastor’s office had been damaged.
The court was told that Mawuena had admitted the offence in her caution statement.
