Three passengers have died from a Toyota Hiace bus accident at Gomoa Mprumam Junction on the Winneba – Apam highway in the Central region, injuring others.

The bus with registration number CR 805-24, according to sources, was speeding when one of its tyres deflated, causing the driver to lose control of the steering. The vehicle veered off the road and somersaulted several times when the driver’s attempt to apply the brakes failed.

Visuals from the accident scene show belongings of the passengers scattered on the road with the lifeless bodies of two men and a woman. Some eyewitnesses were seen attempting to help with the situation.

Apam District Fire Service Commander, DO2 Anthony Kwesi Rhule, confirmed to Onua News that the vehicle was speeding.

“One of the passengers said it was overspeeding, and if the driver had not been overspeeding the accident wouldn’t have occurred,” he said.

He said there were 15 passengers onboard the bus, made up of three children and 12 adults.

The deceased woman was travelling with her children, who, along with other injured passengers, were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Municipal Hospital for treatment.

The fire officer, DO2 Rhule advised drivers to avoid overspeeding on highways and respect road signs to prevent accidents.

“I will advise drivers, your overspeeding on this stretch from Winneba Junction to Apam towards Cape Coast is too much so I will plead with them to reduce their speed and also obey traffic regulations on the highway,” he said.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital mortuary, while some of the injured have been transferred to the Winneba Municipal Hospital for further treatment.
