The three Teacher Unions in Ghana have criticised the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, over comments allegedly linking teachers and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to the falsification of WASSCE results.
In a joint press statement dated September 10, 2026, and signed by GNAT General Secretary Thomas T. Musah, NAGRAT President Jacob Anaba, and PRETAG President King Ali Awudu, the Unions described the Minister’s statement as “unfortunate, offensive, misguided, vicious, derogatory, and irresponsible.”
According to the Unions, Mr Muntaka, who is also MP for Asawase, is reported to have announced on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Asokore Mampong R/C School in the Ashanti Region, that many security service recruits had been dismissed and blacklisted for using forged or doctored WASSCE results.
In the said announcement, the Minister is reported to have stated that “if the falsification of WASSCE results was perpetrated by the GES officials and teachers, that could have been excused, but not applicants into the security services.” A comment the Unions say accuses the entire teaching profession of lack of integrity.
The Unions said the statement by extension indicts “the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, the Director-General of the GES, and Her Excellency the current Vice President of Ghana,” who they noted is a professional teacher and former Minister for Education.
“The GES and the Teaching Profession are NOT monitored as heavily as the Security Agencies,” Muntaka reportedly said, a comparison the Unions say has triggered widespread public debate.
Reacting, the Teacher Unions insisted that entry into the Ghana Education Service requires rigorous checks, including a relevant educational qualification, National Service completion, a valid National Teaching Council (NTC) license, Ghana Card, and audit of certificates at the awarding institutions.
“For the information of the general public, we are not above criticisms. However, when someone subjects us and our Profession to insults and ridicule, to berate and set us up for attacks and create disaffection for us, then we have no option than to defend ourselves,” the statement said.
They warned that teachers cannot be made scapegoats or guinea pigs by any government appointee and stressed that Ghanaian teachers have always been mindful of Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution.
“If you can read this, thank a teacher! Teachers should be celebrated and not denigrated,” the Unions emphasized.
