A majority of Ghanaians who served as respondents in a poll support President John Dramani Mahama’s decision not to seek a third term, according to the latest national telephone survey by Global InfoAnalytics.
The poll found that 65 percent of respondents agree with the president’s decision, while 27 percent disagree and eight percent expressed no opinion.
The findings suggest that most voters prefer a change in leadership after President Mahama completes his current term on January 6, 2028, despite his strong approval ratings and considerable support within the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
However, the poll reveals a more complicated picture when respondents are asked directly whether they support calls for the president to contest again.
Nationally, 40 percent support calls for another Mahama candidacy, while 50 percent oppose the proposal and 10 percent have no opinion.
NDC supporters divided over Mahama’s future
Within the NDC, support for another Mahama contest is significantly higher.
About 63 percent of NDC supporters back calls for President Mahama to seek a third term, while 31 percent oppose the proposal and six percent expressed no opinion.
Among NPP supporters, only 14 percent support another Mahama candidacy, while 76 percent oppose it. Support stands at 33 percent among floating voters, with 57 percent of that group rejecting the proposal.
The results point to a sharp difference between the mood within the governing party and the position of the wider electorate.
Although about six in every 10 NDC supporters want President Mahama to contest again, only four in every 10 respondents nationally support the idea.
The apparent contradiction in the findings may also reflect the different framing of the questions. Respondents largely supported the president’s own decision not to seek another term, but a sizeable minority still expressed support when asked specifically about calls for him to contest again.
About the poll
Global InfoAnalytics targeted 9,242 voters, with 7,761 respondents completing the survey.
The poll covered all 16 regions and used probability random sampling with regional quota limits. The survey was conducted through Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviews.
It has a stated confidence level of 99 percent and a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points. The same respondents are expected to be surveyed every two months as part of the longitudinal study.
