The seven crew members of the missing fishing canoe from Sekondi have been rescued after spending 12 days stranded at sea.
The fishermen aboard the canoe christened “Second Chance” reportedly suffered engine failure shortly after setting sail and drifted into Togolese waters, where they ran out of food and water.
Their rescue was announced by the Executive Director of the Fisheries Commission, Prof. Benjamin Campion on Joy FM on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
Prof. Campion said the crew departed Sekondi Fishing Harbour on October 9, 2026, for a fishing expedition offshore Axim and lost contact thereafter.
“I, the Executive Director has not spoken with them directly, but I have been coordinating with the boat owner (from Sekondi), and he has spoken with them directly,” Prof Campion is quoted as saying.
He added that “They’ve been in touch with the French authorities, [but] because of language barrier, we are not yet sure which of the French authorities whether Benin or Togo, but they are being brought to shore.”
According to him, the fishermen are safe and in good health, and have been given food and water while arrangements are made to bring them ashore for medical examination before traveling back to Ghana by road.
“For now they are very safe. Our major concern was their health and safety because they had run out of resources, but now they are okay, they have been given food, water,” he said.
