One of the over 100 petitioners seeking parliamentary probe into the conduct of the the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on the Cecilia Dapaah matter, Martin Luther Kpebu, has accused the Attorney-General of lying to Ghanaians about the case.

Mr. Kpebu says whilst Godfred Yeboah Dame had indicated in his letter to the EOCO asking it to commence investigations into the matter but does not see the necessity of it due to same action being taken by the police, he went on a radio station to lie that same office conducted a comprehensive probe but found nothing substantial.

According to him, an office the A-G himself tasked not to undertake the probe because the police was doing so, could not be said to have conducted same and found nothing substantial.

Speaking with Nana Yaa Brefo Danso on Onua FM’s Yen Nsempa Friday, May 17, 2024, the renowned lawyer explained how the two accounts from Mr. Dame are inconsistent.

He said in his letter to EOCO which is public, Godfred Dame said “you can commence investigations about the money laundering but it is not necessary because I have tasked the police to investigate the matter. But on Saturday, May 04, he sat on Joy FM and lied that EOCO did a comprehensive investigation and found nothing. Meanwhile your own letter to EOCO says ‘EOCO you can commence but don’t.’ So how come an agency that hasn’t commenced an investigation be said to have conducted a probe and found nothing? ”

Background

The EOCO was handed a responsibility to conduct a probe into allegations of money laundering against former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

The matter was handed to EOCO by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) after suspecting money laundering in the corruption and corruption-related allegations levelled against the woman for stashing huge sums of monies in her house.

After tasking EOCO, whose mandate it is to probe matters of money laundering regarding government officials, it consulted the Office of the Attorney-General for advice and was subsequently advised against carrying out the investigation.

The EOCO, had stated among other things that the file handed it by the OSP contained nothing substantial as a basis for probe.

But Martin Luther Kpebu thinks the Executive Director of EOCO is fond of protecting the ruling government when matters of corruption that will undermine the administration’s reputation come up.

He has been explaining to Nana Yaa Brefo on Onua FM’s Yen Nsempa, how Maame Yaa Tiwaah in several instances chose to protect the interest of the NPP at the expense of the state.
