The Director of Research at the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), Michael Nana Yaw Osei-Atweneboana has bemoaned the destruction of Ghana’s water bodies through activities of illegal mining otherwise known as ‘galamsey’.

He many water bodies in the country have been destroyed over the years  due to the activities of galamsey.

Speaking with Captain Smart on Maakye on Onua TV, Nana Yaw explained that the mercury used in extracting gold affects the organs in the human system including the kidney.

Osei-Atweneboana also cautioned pregnant women in illegal mining communities to be wary of their activities since it can affect their foetus.
