Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement against Corruption, Edem Senanu, has said President Akufo-Addo’s praise for the Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, during the commissioning of the Law House in Accra, raises eyebrows.

According to him, considering the ongoing ambulance purchase trial and its associated controversies regarding the Attorney-General, people will read many meanings into the comments which wouldn’t have raised any concerns without the recent occurrences.

During the commissioning of the Law House in Accra Monday, June 10, 2024, President Akufo-Addo noted that Godfred Dame “has done a yeoman’s job, and I say a hearty ayekoo

to him. After all, and not to be overlooked, he is one of the many worthy products of M/S Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co.”

The comment, is what has stirred controversy, with Mr. Senanu saying the President could have avoided those comments.

“On any other day, it would not have raised eyebrows. It is the immediate context of what has happened in the ambulance case that has raised eyebrows. People are wondering, is this another tacit approval on one hand, and on the other hand, declaring of the gentleman to say that nothing untoward has happened.

“I think the President should just have kept the speech straight to the point, not add additional commentary from his table and so on and so forth. Because, obviously, there are several things that the AG has done in his lifetime and many other cases. So one cannot just say that he is not an effective lawyer.

“But to do it in this context, I think then begins to make people feel that the President, once again, is trying to lay a certain emphasis which goes against what people think he should be doing at this point,” Mr. Senanu indicated.
