One police officer has sustained minor injuries after armed soldiers clashed with personnel of the Paga Police command in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region.

The cause of the clash is yet to be confirmed as the two state security agencies have remained silent. But, information gathered by TV3’s Upper East Regional correspondent, Castro Senyalah, has it that an assault and subsequent detainment of a soldier in mufti by a police investigative team from the district command, triggered the clash.

The altercation led to a standoff between the police and the armed soldiers who took over the premises of the Paga police station in an attempt to free their colleague.

The timely intervention of the leadership of both state security agencies, however, doused tensions and prevented what could have been a near-bloody clash as more soldiers and police officers joined the fray from neighbouring towns.

Clashes

This is the second time personnel of state security agencies have clashed violently with the military. In April 2024, troops keeping the peace in Bawku clashed with personnel of the prison service, leading to three prison officers sustaining various degrees of gunshot wounds.

The incident later sparked public outcry as residents of Bawku who have long accused the military of atrocities, called for its withdrawal from the area.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of the Kassena-Nankana West District and Chairman of the District Security Council, Gerard Ataogye, has met the leadership of the two state security agencies.

Although details of the meeting had not been made public as at the time this report was being filed, it is gathered that the DISEC has directed the commanders to quickly resolve the dispute and call their men to order.
