Flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has asserted that just as former President Mahama couldn’t implement every policy he had on his sleeve, it is same with him as Vice President.
According to him, the NDC flag bearer, with an opportunity of being the President of the Republic, couldn’t implement everything on his mind, it would be disingenuous to require of him to do everything on his mind.
During a media engagement Sunday, August 24, 2024, after the launch of the NPP’s manifesto, Dr. Bawumia indicated that every leader has his focus and the things he wants to do at each point in time, the reason Ghanaians should understand him for his inability to do some of the things he is promising now.
His comments follow a question posed to him at the engagement, requesting why he is not implementing some of the things he is promising, especially regarding the scrapping of some nuisance taxes introduced by his government with him as Head of the Economic Management Team.
“I must have a manifesto otherwise if I do everything now, if I could, what would I do when I come into office? I mean how can you do everything now?
“Even President Mahama, former president who was president, I’m only vice president, but he was president. Why didn’t he do everything then? I mean why is he coming back? He had full authority. I don’t have full authority,” he stated.
He continued that the Budget which was approved by Parliament is not his but rather the President’s, the reason he cannot implement any policies out of it.
“The budget that has gone to parliament which has been passed is not my budget. Is it my budget? It’s not my budget. The budget goes in the name of the President. It doesn’t go in the name of the Vice President but when you have to think about what new do you want to do, you come up with new ideas and I’ve come up with new ideas which I want to do when we come to office,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia added that every leader has a vision and his is what he is presenting to Ghanaians to give him the opportunity to implement if he is voted for as president.
“Everyone who is running for office whether you are Kamala Harris or you are Bawumia, you still have to think about what you have to do when you get into office and this is why I’m presenting my new ideas as to what to do,” he stated.
