Founder and aspiring presidential candidate of Action People’s Party (APP), Kenneth Nana Kwame Asamoah, has pulled out from the 2024 presidential race after picking nomination forms.

Nana Kwame Asamoah, speaking at a press conference in Accra, announced the party’s decision to withdraw from the upcoming December 7 polls.

The decision, according to him, is not borne out of financial constraints, but to demand the government to take drastic measures to stop illegal mining.

Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s), labour unions and several institutions have expressed concern over the deterioration and damage illegal mining activities has done to the environment in Ghana.

They have intensified calls on the government to take actions to ban illegal Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) to safeguard the environment.

In this vein, that APP leadership has decided to bow out from the December 7 general elections to raise the red flag against the menace.

He insisted, APP cannot participate in the elections whilst the forest, farmlands and the water bodies are being destroyed by illegal mining activities.

“We have decided to pull out from the 2024 presidential race not because we don’t have the financial muscle. But we cannot partake in the elections to rule Ghana whilst illegal mining activities are destroying our land,” he reiterated.

He criticised President Akufo Addo for failing to end galamsey after pledging to put his presidency on the line to fight the canker.

He hinted of petitioning the Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice and other agencies to demand resignation of President Akufo-Addo for failing to halt illegal mining.

He likewise challenged the government to desperately place an embargo on all mining activities in the country.
