Politicians have been asked to stay out of the illegal mining menace which is destroying Ghana’s environment by degrading farmlands and forest reserves, leaving almost all water bodies in the country polluted.

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the governing New Patriotic Party says the fight should be tackled devoid of politics since the canker is a national threat.

According to him, the operation should be handed entirely to the military with clear objectives and targets at the behest of the commanders without any political interference.

“To me the entire operation should be left in the hand of the military. They should be given clear objectives and targets and the rest should be left in the hands of their commanders and I can assure you, if that is done, within a week, you’ll see a clear change.

“The operation should entirely be free from directions and directives of politicians. What is facing us now is a national problem. It is not partisan in any form. It must be tackled as such,” he said Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe advised that the source of the problem, which is surface mining, must be tackled, either licensed or not, re-echoing the calls for a state of emergency.

“We should find the source of the problem, the source of the problem is so clear, it’s surface mining so a halt should be made on surface mining as soon as possible and that is where we have to declare a state of emergency, on all water bodies, forests, licensed or unlicensed,” he added.

The NPP stalwart admonished that the operation should be addressed with an entire battalion instead of a company.

“This particular operation is not a political operation. It must be an operation that would be handled entirely by the military. And it is an operation that just a company cannot handle it. It is an operation that must be handled by a whole battalion to be able to have a very successful operation,” he added.
