ACP (RTD) Dr. Benjamin Agordzo has opened up on his experience with the justice system in Ghana, highlighting the ills and shortfalls that need to be addressed.
He told Blakk Rasta in an interview on the 3FM Urban Blend show on Wednesday 16th October, 2024 that though he was falsely accused and subjected to all kinds of unpleasant treatment, he was never broken, down but encouraged to put everything into writing, and this is the time to tell his side of the story.
“It was the claim of the government that I was plotting a coup and I insisted on my innocence. They told their story at the time and a court of competent jurisdiction acquitted and discharged me. Now is my time to tell my side of the story which I have put in my upcoming book which would be launched on the 30th October, 2024 at the Christ the King Auditorium” he disclosed.
According to the former Assistant Commissioner of Police, he was compelled by his thirty years’ experience in the Ghana Police Service right from the tactical through operational to administrative levels to speak about the need to wean the police service off government and political control as it was seen in a viral video of his presentation at the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG).
ACP Agordzo mentioned that he envisaged that the highly talked about viral video which touched on very critical and sensitive issues about the Police Service and government could bring him troubles which led to him being tracked by the then Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) and eventually charged with treason.
‘The nature of the job here is that when you speak against the establishment in that strong manner, they will observe you and so speaking against the presidency, I expected that’.
Mr. Benjamin Agordzo further revealed that his maiden book, titled ‘From Persecution to Freedom: Reflection of My Journey through the Justice System of Ghana’ consists of 28 chapters, and over 500 pages chronicling all the events from invitation to judgement.
“This book is meant to sensitize people who may for one reason or the other find themselves with some of these law enforcement agencies on how they should conduct themselves and the things they should watch out for” Agordzo noted.
Recall
ACP Dr. Agordzo together with eight others were charged variously on April 24, 2021, for conspiracy to commit high treason, abetment to high treason and high treason.
A three-member panel of judges of an Accra High Court on 24 January, 2024 discharged and acquitted Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr. Benjamin Agordzo, Colonel Samuel Kodzo Gameli and one other junior military officer, Corporal Seidu Abubakar.
However, six of the ten (10) alleged coup plotters were convicted on counts of conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason while one of the accused, Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, the Chief Executive Officer of Citadel Hospital died in the course of the trial.
