Samuel Nartey George, the Prampram Member of Parliament has accused the government of stuffing the courts with members who are politically tainted.
He alleges that is the reason the party always runs to court with any issue even if they do not possess ambiguity for interpretation.
Sam George was commenting on the controversy in Parliament over the declaration of some four seats vacant Tuesday, October 22, 2024 when he said the government rushes to the court because it knows the kind of judges it has placed there.
Speaking with Onua TV’s Akua Sarpomaa in Parliament Tuesday, he said the Legislature is subservient to the Constitution and not the courts, and would therefore oblige by what’s codified in the law.
“The NPP has packed the courts that’s why they always say we’ll go to court. A former parliamentary candidate of the NPP is [a justice] at the court. Parliament is subservient to the Constitution and not the court,” he stated.
He added that Parliament has over the years relented on its powers and allowed the Executive and Judiciary to bully its authority, something they are not going to tolerate anymore.
“Parliament has slept on its responsibility for far too long” he said, adding that the Supreme Court has failed to hear the Anti-gay law which is before it since the beginning of the year but rushed to thrash a ruling by the Speaker.
“The President is sitting quietly. Parliament has sat back to be bullied by the Executive and Judiciary for far too long,” he added.
Mr. Goerge’s comments follow the majority-minority conundrum in the House where both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) are claiming majority status.
The confusion comes as a result of a ruling by the Speaker of Parliament Thursday, October 17, 2024, where some four seats were declared vacant. The declaration, subsequently reduced the membership of the governing NPP, who were then Majority to 135, with the opposition NDC, who were the Minority, remaining with 136 members to assume the Majority position.
Leader of the NPP caucus, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, filed an ex parte motion in the Supreme Court, where it ruled to stay with the ruling of the Speaker.
This, has created a confusion since, with both caucuses claiming to be the majority side of the House.
The Speaker adjourned sitting indefinitely after the House couldn’t attain quorum.
