The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned what it describes as the ethnic profiling targeted at people of the Volta region by some security agencies deployed to major barriers in parts of the region ahead of the upcoming elections.
Speaking at a final regional rally of the party at Hohoe in the Volta region Saturday, November 30, 2024, General Secretary of the NDC, Franklin Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, alleged that Ewe speaking people traveling from Accra back to the Volta region are subjected to all kinds of harassment by immigration and police officers at the Asikuma and Sogakope checkpoints.
“It has come to our notice that in major barriers in our region, Volta region, somewhere in Asikuma also in Sogakope, we are now having the police working with the immigration and having the audacity to stop vehicles that our citizens from this region are in and having the temerity to ask Volta regional children to produce their cards before they can cross their barrier.
“Sons and daughters of the Volta region, enough is enough,” the NDC General Secretary stressed urging the people of the Volta region to rise against such offensive discrimination.
The former Ketu South MP further assured the people that the next NDC government with John Dramani Mahama as President, will prioritise the development needs of the region.
He cited the Ho – Aflao, Keta – Aflao and the Eastern Corridor roads as key projects among others the NDC will execute in the Volta region if they win the December elections.
The allegations made by the NDC add up to concerns chiefs in some parts of the Akatsi North district raised last week regarding the deployment of immigration officers to communities along the border within their traditional areas.
The Chiefs accused the officers of harassment and intimidation.
With just a few days to the general elections, key stakeholders in the region are worried the deployment of the officers to the border communities may just be another ploy by government to suppress votes in the opposition NDC’s stronghold.
