The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s failure to address the issues of financial malfeasance in the administration largely contributed to its humiliating defeat in last Saturday’s elections.

Dr. Richard Baah Amoako, a founding member of the the party, who is making the assertion says during the administration when a lot of malfeasance occurred, the leadership, instead of addressing the canker, did not do so, but rather went ahead to borrow more and squander.

According to him, Ghanaians were not oblivious of the development which led to the party’s massive failure in the just ended polls.

Speaking on TV3’s extensive coverage of Ghana Decides 2024, the senior Political Science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) said the deeds of the party registered something on the minds of Ghanaians that those running affairs were not up to task.

“All the malfeasance that have gone on, they put it at the back of their heads. Hoping that somebody would come and say that we are going to address this. Nobody did, as if it vanished. And then they kept borrowing and more malfeasance.

“And then what happened is that the idea of the party not being good or people running the party not being good solidified. I can tell you the things solidified in the NPP, the things that happened earlier, and more came, made it even worse,” he stated, adding that the development resulted in those at the hem of affairs pushing Bawumia at the forefront to cover their tracks.

“…then, because they’ve done all these bad things they wanted to cover their backs, and who is going to do it for them? Bawumia. People know that. Bawumia, I said it several times, they want him to cover their tracks for them. It wasn’t him who was supposed to come to the forefront.

“He is one of those who was at the front but he wasn’t the forefront. It was Alan who was supposed to come to the forefront. And yet because they did not trust Alan to cover their backs for them completely, they opted for Bawumia,” he said Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

The political scientist’s comments follow the abysmal performance of the NPP in the 2024 general elections held Saturday, December 07, 2024.

John Dramani Mahama, after Saturday’s election secured 6,328,397 votes constituting 56.55% of the total valid votes cast across the country in all 16 regions.

Contested by 12 presidential candidates including some who contested as independent, his main contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the Vice President, managed 41.61% with 4,657,304 of the polls.

According to the EC, results of nine (9) constituencies as at the time of the declaration of the results had not been added due to some challenges, adding that if all the votes were added to the candidate who placed second, it would still not change the winner of the exercise.

Also, 239,109 ballots were rejected out of the total valid votes.
