Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba has revealed plans by his outfit to introduce a Road Safety subject in basic schools across the country.
He noted that discussions will be held with the Ghana Education Service (GES) on the issue for a more detailed curriculum to be instituted in basic schools.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Hot issues with Keminni Amanor on March 23, 2025, he explained that this is crucial in dealing with the spate of road accidents in the country.
Mr. Amaliba stressed that the subject will provide comprehensive road safety education to children at the early stages to conscientize their minds on the need for discipline on our roads.
“Before I came, my research director informed me that they have been able to ensure that GES included some road safety education at basic level but looking at the kinds of things that are in the basic school, I think that we need to have a more detailed curriculum.
“I am thinking and I will soon engage the GES for them to have a subject called road safety because when you catch them young then you reduce the spate of accidents.
“It can either be examinable or not but there must be a subject called Road Safety because our roads are becoming like death traps and we cannot continue that way.
“The best to do is to have the young ones so that when they grow, they will not behave like the way the young ones are behaving when they are behind the steering wheels,” he stated.
Mr. Amaliba further issued a stern warning to hawkers to stay off pedestrian walkways across the country.
He noted that his outfit will collaborate with the various District Assemblies to ensure that pedestrian walkways are free.
“It is just collaboration with the District Assemblies…I want my pedestrian walkway to be free so that pedestrian will not be walking and competing with motorists on the street, if that is done, I am glad,” he said on Sunday, March 23, 2025.
