The Ghanaian football fan who invaded the Accra Sports Stadium pitch during Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad has been sentenced to 100 days in prison.
He was arraigned before an Accra District Court on Monday, March 24.
During the Black Stars impressive win in the Group I qualifier, which ended 5-0, Mohammed Huzeinu breached security to run across the pitch.
The 25-year-old was arrested, nonetheless.
His action has potential financial consequences for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as FIFA frowns on it.
The Association, during the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, was fined GH¢10,000 after a fan invaded the pitch in Ghana’s win over South Africa at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.
The GFA suffered another GH¢20,000 fine for a similar action at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium after a mass pitch invasion in Ghana’s 4-3 win over Central African Republic (CAR). The payments were exacted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Therefore, the sentencing will serve as a deterrent to other fans who threaten to breach protocol and jump onto the pitch.
