The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has welcomed the Minister of Energy and Green Transition’s ministerial committee tasked to explore the best approach to transform the ECG.

The Union says it has observed keenly, developments at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) since the appointment of Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor as sector Minister.

In a statement signed by the General Secretary of the Union, Timothy Nyame, and issued on Wednesday, April 02, 2025, PUWU expressed its support for the repositioning of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to improve service delivery to Ghanaians, thereby welcoming the Minister’s approach.

“This is why we welcomed the ministerial committee established by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition to explore the best approach for transforming ECG,” portions of the statement contained.

According to PUWU, it had earlier submitted a joint Position Paper with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to the Minister, highlighting the major challenges facing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

It says it proposed solutions to address these challenges that didn’t require privatisation of the power distribution company.

The paper, according to PUWU’s statement, specifically identified procurement lapses as a key issue. It was no surprise, PUWU noted, that the Minister’s committee also flagged this problem in its report.

“Among the key concerns raised with the committee were procurement issues
and excessive government interference in the company. Therefore, PUWU was
not surprised when the Ministerial Investigative Committee uncovered significant procurement and clearing violations.

“We have repeatedly sought clarification from top management about the procurement process, especially why containers purchased were allowed to remain at the port, incurring demurrage.

“We have suggested that top management enter into procurement agreements with suppliers who can deliver goods directly to the agreed locations,” it stated further.

PUWU has rallied its full support for the Committee’s efforts to locate the missing containers and making those responsible be held accountable for their actions.
