Properties worth millions of Ghana cedis have been destroyed in a devastating fire outbreak at the Inchaban Market in the Shama Municipality of the Western Region.
The incident has left affected traders devastated as they count their losses.
Known as the second busiest market in the municipality and a hub for clothing trade, Inchaban Market turned into a tragic scene when the fire broke out around 3:00 am on April 9.
The blaze destroyed at least 10 shops, plunging many traders into a state of despair and uncertainty.
According to eyewitnesses, the situation could have been far worse if not for the timely intervention of firefighters, especially considering that many of the surrounding structures are made of wood.
Amid the recent surge in market fires across the country, this marks the first time the Western Region is recording such an incident.
The outbreak has reignited calls for the construction of a befitting and safer marketplace for traders in the area.
Emelia Arthur, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Shama pledged to leading the charge.
She praised the firefighters for their swift response.
