Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate a police officer for allegedly assaulting him.

The Minority Leader says the officer –Constable Forson –during the ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Monday, May 5, 2025, manhandled him at the precinct of Parliament.

In a statement addressed to the IGP Monday, May 5, the Member of Parliament for Effutu said he wants the police hierarchy to take “appropriate disciplinary action” against the officer for assaulting him.

He further explained that the petition was accompanied by a detailed account of what transpired on the day, which had been misconstrued in the media space afterwards.

Afenyo-Markin’s petition follows a viral video that surfaced on social media showing the Member of Parliament and a Leader of the House confronting the police officer.

However, the MP has countered the narrative, claiming that the officer assaulted him and that what was captured on the video was his defence against Constable Forson’s actions.

PETITION FOR INVESTIGATION AND DISCIPLINARY ACTION AGAINST CONSTABLE FORSON FOR ASSAULT AT PARLIAMENT HOUSE DURING THE
SAVE THE JUDICIARY” DEMONSTRATION

I hereby formally petition your office to investigate and take appropriate disciplinary action against Constable Forson, a tall, fair, and heavily built officer who was stationed at the entrance of Parliament House to provide security during today’s “Save the Judiciary” demonstration.

Constable Forson assaulted me at the entrance of Parliament House during the demonstration.

To address this incident and to correct misleading narratives circulating in the public domain, I have issued a public statement detailing the events as they occurred.

I rely on the said statement, which is hereby attached for your information and further action.

Counting on your usual cooperation.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to release the MP for probe over the matter.
