Members of the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG), have described the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) as a politically motivated move.
The National Public Relations Officer of UPNMG, John Agbenyeavu accused leadership of GRNMA of not following due process in declaring the strike action as no other union has agreed to the strike except GRNMA.
“We are against this strike because we know it is a political game that the leadership of GRNMA are playing.” John Agbenyeavu told Johnnie Hughes on 3FM Sunrise on June 9.
John Agbenyeavu also accused the leadership of GRNMA of undermining internal governance structures, while acting outside its constitutional mandate to lay down their tools.
“You (GRNMA) cannot engage in illegality and pretend to have the welfare of members at heart.”
The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana further stated that it has disassociated itself from withdrawing services to demand better conditions of service.
“Our members are not on strike, they are in the various hospitals working for Ghanaians.”
The GRNMA had embarked on the strike to protest delays in implementing their 2024 Collective Agreement, which addresses key conditions of service, including unpaid allowances and delayed postings. The strike has led to severe disruptions in healthcare delivery, with nurses withdrawing outpatient and emergency services, leaving hospitals overwhelmed.
Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has stressed the importance of dialogue and engagement in resolving the ongoing impasse between the government and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
Meanwhile the National Labour Commission (NLC) has secured an interlocutory injunction against the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
