The Ministry of Education is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives at Nkwanta Senior High School, following a resurgence of tribal conflict in the Nkwanta area of the Oti Region.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the fatal shooting of two female day students on Thursday, 26th June, and the loss of a male student who was struck by a stray bullet on Friday, 27th June, 2025,” the Ministry said in the statement on Friday.
“This is an unthinkable tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and the entire school community during this painful time,” the Ministry stated.
The Ministry expressed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and solidarity with the staff and students of Nkwanta SHS. “We stand with all those affected by these senseless acts of violence and assure them of our support during this difficult period.”
The Minister for Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Acting Regional Director of Education in the Oti Region for their prompt response.
“We applaud the decision to temporarily close the school as a safety measure and to arrange police escorts to ensure the safe evacuation of students to their homes,” said the Minister. “The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our utmost priority.”
Mr. Iddrisu has also directed the Management of the GES to continue monitoring the situation closely and to work in coordination with local authorities to protect school property and safeguard lives.
The Ministry concluded, “We hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the conflict so that students can return to a secure and supportive learning environment.”
