Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma North, has rejected the Electoral Commission’s decision to rerun 19 polling stations in the constituency.
This follows months of protracted disagreement over the results of 62 polling stations in the constituency during the December 2024 elections.
After months of stakeholder engagements, the EC resolved that 19 of the 62 polling stations would have a rerun after the major parties involved—the NPP and NDC—reached a compromise.
The EC has said these 19 polling stations are going to be rerun before the results can be declared.
But the NPP’s candidate is criticising the Commission for inconsistency, noting that the EC had already informed Parliament under oath that only three polling stations had not been declared.
According to her, the EC’s sudden shift from the remaining three polling stations to rerunning a whole 19 polling stations leaves much to be desired, making her question the timing and reasoning behind the decision.
“According to the EC, they had previously testified under oath in Parliament that only three polling stations remained to be declared. Therefore, the call for a rerun seems unjustifiable,” she stated, highlighting the inconsistencies in the EC’s actions.
She accused the governing National Democratic Congress of possibly manipulating the process to its advantage, making her question the integrity of the Commission’s decision-making process.
“I am not happy with it. We are not going to accept this decision. My reason is very simple. We have gone through all the collation, and we are at three polling stations for us to complete the collation and declaration, and so what changed? We had the EC coming to Parliament, swearing under oath that we have only three polling stations left, and consistently, that is what it has been so far,” she explained.
Meanwhile, the NDC, which has called for a rerun since the commencement of the brouhaha, has welcomed the decision, saying the development is a true reflection of democracy.
Its Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko-Computer, speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, applauded the EC for not kowtowing to the dictates of a particular group or individual but rather following the rule of law.
“Democracy is one thing that we have chosen for ourselves in Ghana, that we should be governed by rule of law and not somebody’s whims and caprices. So, I’m happy with the outcome of the decision by Electoral Commission to re-run 19 of the 37 polling stations,” he stated.
