The Electoral Commission has set September 2 for the by-election in the Akwatia Constituency.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Rashid Tanko Computer on July 25.

“Nominations will be opened on August 5-7, 2025,” Mr Tanko Computer revealed after an IPAC meeting.

The by-election has been necessitated by the demise of the incumbent Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Mr Kumi died after a short illness.

Meanwhile, the NDC has announced the opening of nominations for party members interested in contesting the by-election in the Akwatia Constituency.

The party says interested candidates can pick nomination forms on July 28 and return them on July 30, 2025.

The primary election to elect a candidate for the by-election will be held on August 4, 2025.

This is contained in a press release dated July 25 and signed by the General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey.

“The National Democratic Congress wishes to inform the general public, Party members, and prospective aspirants of the following arrangements regarding the upcoming Akwatia Constituency Parliamentary Primaries in the Eastern Region:
1. Filing of Nomination Forms
• Nomination forms are to be collected from the Eastern Regional Office of the Party.
• Completed forms must be returned to the same office after filling.
2. Delegates List
• Delegates list will be provided to all aspirants upon verification that the approved filing fee has been deposited into the Party’s official account.
3. Filing Fees and Concessions
• Female aspirants and persons living with disabilities shall enjoy a 50% reduction on the approved filing fee.” the press release outlined.

“All aspirants and stakeholders are expected to strictly adhere to the timelines outlined.
The Party urges all aspirants to comply with these directives and conduct their activities with decorum, decency, unity, and in the spirit of fairness,” Mr Kwetey cautioned.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) to which the late Ernest Kumi belongs, is yet to announce the opening of nominations.

The winner of the NDC’s primary to be held on August 4, 2025 will lock horns with the one who will be elected by the NPP to represent them.

In a related development, Parliament has been officially informed about the death of Mr Ernest Kumi.
