The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampo has assured health facilities and suppliers that, the Authority is in a strong position to pay claims of their suppliers promptly.

Dr. Asare Bampo has explained that, in the past, it had to take four months before suppliers and health facilities were paid, indicating that things have changed under the current administration.

The CEO was speaking in an exclusive interview with Onua News in Accra when he made the disclosure.

Dr. Bampo added that “if these facilities have not been paid at the end of the month, it is either the claims have not been submitted, or they have been submitted but the NHIA is doing further checks.”

He said once the claims are vetted and passed through to the Office of the Deputy Chief Executive Finance and Investment and gets approval, it comes to them for payment to be made.

Speaking on the effectiveness of the Scheme, he said his outfit has been taking a nationwide tour to ascertain how it is helping beneficiaries, where he disclosed that pregnant women, children and the aged, especially, have been benefiting immensely.

“For pregnant women, the elderly, and children who are ill, they use the cards because it takes a huge financial burden away from them,” he stated.

Their findings from the tour, he said, conforms with President’s universal health coverage vision “which is actually getting health at the point of need without financial burden”.

On the issue of some challenges with the Scheme, including alleged extortion, Dr. Bampo stated that the policy cannot be incident-free since they are working with human institutions.

Meanwhile, he indicated that measures are in place to avert the various challenges confronting the Scheme.
