Ghana must engage in a thorough national debate before considering any move to join BRICS, Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has noted during a press briefing on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Mr Iddrisu stressed the importance of weighing the long-term consequences of aligning with BRICS, particularly in relation to Ghana’s existing partnerships with Western nations.

“If Ghana wants to be part of BRICS, what are the benefits against the implications of breaking our ties with the West?” he asked, calling for high-level dialogue and broad public consultation on the matter.

“We cannot just take a decision on that. We have to weigh what the benefits and consequences may be,” he added, cautioning against hasty commitments without strategic evaluation.

BRICS is a geopolitical bloc originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to promote economic cooperation among emerging markets.

In recent years, the alliance has expanded to include other countries seeking to reduce reliance on Western-dominated financial systems such as the IMF and World Bank.

The group advocates for a multipolar global order and has launched initiatives including a New Development Bank.

While several African nations have expressed interest in joining BRICS, analysts warn that membership could come with diplomatic and economic trade-offs, especially for countries with strong Western ties.
