The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), along with drivers and allied transport workers, is staging a massive demonstration against the alleged takeover of their lorry station by a private investor.
The groups claim that the site, now being taken over by a private developer, has long been designated for a lorry station. The Tuesday, September 16, 2025, protest is causing severe traffic congestion in the city.
According to the demonstrators, they intend petitioning the government to protect public transport infrastructure and safeguard the livelihoods of drivers and traders.
They took to the streets with placards and a picture of the person allegedly responsible for the takeover, sending a warning to him to stay off the land.
The GPRTU had on Monday, September 15, 2025, held a press conference which was addressed by its Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, prior to the protest on Tuesday.
At the presser, Amoah disclosed the Union’s intention to go on the demonstration which he said was a culmination of long-standing grievance over the continuous encroachment on public land meant for public transport infrastructure.
He stressed that the demonstrated was aimed at sending a clear signal to both the government and private investors about the importance of protecting public lands meant for lorry stations that are critical to the city’s transport operations.
