The Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has issued clarification regarding Ghanaian boxers with competitive bouts abroad in the face of the suspension of all boxing activities.
A statement issued by the IMC Chairman, Samir Captan, on Wednesday, October 1 indicated that boxers who have secured international bouts abroad have not been barred from such events.
However, they are to meet three major conditions.
Firstly, the boxer must have received a valid international fight contract.
Secondly, the boxer must have successfully completed and passed all mandatory medical examinations including MRI/CT scans and blood tests.
Thirdly, the boxer’s documentation must have been duly vetted and approved by the IMC, following clearance from the International Medical Committee (IMC).
“This exemption applies strictly to boxers who satisfy the above criteria.”
The statement also reminded all stakeholders to ensure full compliance with safety regulations and to notify the IMC in advance of any planned departure.
“Please note that this directive does not lift the suspension on domestic boxing promotions and events, which remain in full effect until further notice.”
All boxing activities were suspended by the National Sports Authority (NSA) in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation following the death of super middleweight boxer Ernest Akushey popularly known as Bahubali eleven days after his defeat to Jacob Dickson.
The sad incident came months after Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju died during a fight at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
