Flooding has once again hit parts of Accra following heavy rains that began around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, leaving several areas submerged and traffic at a standstill.
Videos circulating on social media show flooded streets in Kasoa, Weija, and other parts of the capital, as residents struggle to navigate through the water.
The downpour, which lasted for hours, caused massive traffic jams, with bus stops crowded as stranded commuters waited for commercial vehicles, popularly known as ‘trotro’, to get home.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) earlier today issued a warning of moderate to heavy rainfall, cautioning that flooding was likely in low-lying areas. The agency also noted that the rains could be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Accra’s flooding woes have persisted over the years, often triggered by blocked drains, poor waste disposal, and construction on waterways. Even brief rains are enough to cause chaos, highlighting the city’s inadequate drainage infrastructure and weak enforcement of building regulations.
Authorities are being urged to step up desilting of drains and enforce environmental laws to prevent future flooding, while residents are advised to stay safe and avoid flood-prone areas as the rains continue.
