The lengthy travel time on the Sunyani-Ntotroso-Acherensua highway, often a challenge for commuters due to its deteriorating condition, is set for improvement thanks to a partnership between Newmont Corporation and the Government of Ghana.

This collaboration aims to reconstruct the critical 46-kilometer stretch of road, which has been in poor condition for the past 20 years.

‎Currently riddled with potholes and manholes, the highway has caused significant inconvenience for travelers and has led to frequent vehicle maintenance issues for commercial drivers.

However, the situation is about to change as Newmont has entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Roads and Highways for the comprehensive renovation of the road.

‎On October 7, 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Accra between Newmont and the Ministry of Roads and Highways, marking the official commencement of the project. The appointed contractor has already begun mobilizing resources to initiate construction work promptly.

‎David Johnson, Newmont’s Director of Communications – Africa, emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development, complementing its significant investments in health, education, and community development initiatives.

‎The rehabilitation of the Sunyani-Atronie-Ntotroso-Acherensua highway is part of Newmont’s broader efforts to improve infrastructure in its host communities.

In the Ahafo Region, the company has previously supported upgrades to several major roads, including the Ntotroso-Kenyasi road, the Hwediem-Kenyasi road, as well as various internal roads connecting the Ntotroso, Wamahinso, Gyedu, Kenyasi No.1, and Kenyasi No.2 communities.

‎Newmont acknowledges the vital role robust road infrastructure plays in facilitating the transportation of goods and services, and in driving local economic growth.

By actively supporting the government’s infrastructure improvement initiatives, the company is fulfilling its mission to create value and enhance lives through sustainable and responsible mining practices.
