A shocking incident in the Nkontompo neighborhood has ignited anger among the youth.

That is because morgue attendants from the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital abandoned a decomposing body in the community.

The dispute began on Friday 14 November 2025 when the body of a local man, known as Uncle Kofi [alias Alright], was discovered in his room. The discovery was prompted by a foul odor that had permeated the area.

Initially, residents thought it was the stench of a rotten animal until they discovered the decomposing body of Uncle Kofi in his room.

Acting out of a sense of duty, the deceased’s landlord, Samuel Kwofie, alongside members of the Nkontompo Electoral Area Unit Committee, immediately notified the police.

In a bid to preserve the body while they searched for next of kin, the group transported the remains to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital morgue, expecting professional assistance.

However, in a move that sparked public fury, the mortuary attendants refused to accept the remains. A few hours later, the body was returned to the community, with attendants citing the advanced state of decomposition and the overpowering smell.

The body sat in the open, a stark and distressing sight, until public pressure forced a second official response. The police returned, this time accompanied by a team from the Metropolitan Environmental Health Office, who finally conveyed the body back to the morgue for proper storage.

The hospital administration has since broken its silence on the controversial decision.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Christian Baidoo defended the staff’s actions, stating that the remains were not prepared according to standard protocol.

He indicated that the community ought to have involved the environmental health officers from the outset to properly handle the decomposing body before bringing it to the mortuary.
