The Ministry of Transport has today, Wednesday, December 10, 2025, began the deployment of buses on some routes in Accra to ease the evening transport congestion that has characterised the capital.

Sector Minister, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, who announced the initiative says the intervention is meant to reduce the long queues at the Central Business District and other choked areas, and also to improve safety and curb the excessive fare hikes by some commercial drivers during peak hours.

Addressing journalists in Parliament Wednesday, December 10, 2025, the Minister noted that the initiative forms part of the Ministry’s emergency response to growing public concerns about scarcity of reliable evening transport across the city.

He explained that the Ministry, in collaboration with Intercity STC Coaches Limited, will redeploy long-distance buses that return to Accra early, assigning them to busy intra-city routes during rush hours.

“We are going to employ some buses commencing from today, 10th December,” he said. According to him, STC will make available buses that are not in use, ensuring that “those buses are available at the peak hours to support our commuters who have closed from work to get home safely.”

He noted that each corridor will receive at least eight buses that will operate between 4:30pm and 8:30pm. The four routes to be catered in the first phase of the deployment are:

  • Accra to Madina and Adenta
  • Accra to Achimota and Amasaman
  • Accra to Mallam and Kasoa
  • Accra to Tema Beach Road

The Minister noted that the four corridors were selected as a result of the high passenger demand with the severe transportation gaps recorded in those areas. He also said the Ministry intends scaling up the number of buses in the coming weeks to ensure that “we’ll be able to pick all our commuters home safely.”

Commuters in Accra have long complained of unpredictable evening transport, with many forced to pay inflated fares as shortages allow some drivers to take advantage of stranded passengers.

The Ministry insists the new deployment is an interim measure as broader reforms aimed at modernising the city’s urban transport system are being considered.
