The President, John Dramani Mahama, has said government is considering replacing the current TV license with a Public Media Levy designed to strengthen funding for public broadcasters.

He says discussions are far advanced at Cabinet to get the TV license law reformed, ahead of submitting proposed amendments to Parliament.

As part of his engagements with state institutions, the President noted at a visit to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on Thursday, January 8, 2026, that most members in Cabinet have aligned with the proposal.

“There are a few suggestions we have with regard to the so-called TV licence. And I think that our thinking is going in the same direction to amend that law to make it a public media levy of some sort,” the President noted.

According to the President, the proposed levy would have a broader scope to boost revenue mobilisation, enabling the state to provide more effective support to public media practice.

He added that key stakeholders, including the GBC, would be consulted once the deliberations are concluded, before presenting the amendments to Parliament.

“When we’re ready, we’ll be discussing at Cabinet, but we’ll discuss with you what our thinking is before we finally go to Parliament and amend the law,” he said.

President Mahama expressed optimism over improving funding for public media institutions through the reforms, allowing them to operate and fulfill their mandate efficiently.

“I’m sure that with some of the suggestions we’ve got, you’ll be able to raise the amount of funding that it brings in and make it better able to do your work,” the President added.
