Dr. Joshua Zaato, Political Science Lecturer and Policy Analyst at the University of Ghana has criticised Prof. Frimpong-Boateng over his comment describing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a ‘fake’ party.
This comes after the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation also alleged that the party “twisted people’s arms, bribing delegates and intimidated others” to elect Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia as a flagbearer. He said the NPP is a corrupt party.
But Dr. Zaato noted that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng was wrong in making such disparaging comment against the party. He noted that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng had the option of voting out the current leader of the party in the upcoming congress rather than launching a scathing critique of the NPP.
“So, having a problem with a primary is different. It is completely justified. But if you now go out and say that the party that you belong to is fake. That is different from saying you have a problem with the primary.
“Secondly, if your problem is with the leadership of the party or the party’s structure, you have the chance. The party is going to congress to elect all the leaders this year. So you can just say that Thank God, we have the opportunity to replace all the leaders.
“If you are saying the party is corrupt and fake, why do you want to be part of a corrupt and fake party? To whom much is given, much is expected,” he stated in an interview on TV3’s News Central, Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
Zaato explained that considering the fact that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng is a senior member of the party, the party has every right to call him to order and protect their integrity.
He said the comments by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng were unusual of a senior party member.
“If a junior member of the party could say this, then the party could say that okay this is a floor member thinking but this is a former cabinet member of the party and also a senior member of the party.
“To say that the party is corrupt without providing single evidence, to say that the party is fake, that is not usual commentary from a senior member of the party and so the party has the right to try to protect its integrity. The party has the right to say that we have an integrity to protect here and if someone is saying that we are fake and we are corrupt, that person better be able to justify those things if not then they have to part ways,” he stressed.
Dr. Zaato concluded “Why do you want to continue to be part of a corrupt and fake organisation? That is the question that the leadership of the party is asking him to do.”
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 13, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong said the party has initiated internal processes to expel the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
This comes after what the party described as disparaging remarks made by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng against its leadership and internal structures in an interview on Monday, January 12, 2026.
The party noted that the conduct and public utterances of Prof Frimpong-Boateng are “highly reprehensible and inimical to the values, unity and integrity of the Party.”
