Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has accused the police of violating the rights of suspects by keeping them beyond the 48 hours mandated.
Under the criminal code, a suspect is not supposed to be kept beyond 48 hours without being arraigned.
Kpebu says this is not a good practice and hence should stop.
Speaking on the Key Points on Tv3 Saturday, January 24, he revealed that he has on a number of occasions filed complaints at the office of the CID boss, but the practice keeps happening.
“CID boss, your men are keeping suspects beyond the 48-hour period,” he said.
He added, “those bad nuts who derive pleasure in keeping suspects beyond 48 hours must stop…prepare before you arrest the person or as soon as you arrest, be preparing to go to court.”
