The Ministry of Education has clarified that the exclusion of Ga and Adangbe from the initial rollout of a new Artificial Intelligence (AI)–powered education tool does not amount to marginalisation, following concerns raised by members of the two language communities.
The clarification comes after the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced a collaboration between the Ministry and Google to develop the AI-based learning tool in four Ghanaian languages.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry said the selected languages form part of a pilot programme aimed at testing the effectiveness and adaptability of the technology before it is deployed nationwide.
“The selection of four local languages is strictly on a pilot basis,” the Ministry stated.
“The pilot phase is intended to test the efficacy, adaptability and educational impact of the AI learning tool before its gradual scale-up and nationwide implementation.”
The Ministry stressed that the initiative is designed to be inclusive and will eventually cover all approved Ghanaian languages, including Ga and Adangbe.
“Upon the successful completion and evaluation of the pilot phase, the programme will be expanded to cover all twelve approved Ghanaian languages,” the statement said. “At no point is the pilot intended to marginalise or permanently exclude any linguistic or cultural group within the country.”
Reaffirming its commitment to Ghana’s linguistic diversity, the Ministry said equitable representation remains central to all education initiatives, particularly those involving emerging technologies.
“The Ministry of Education deeply values Ghana’s linguistic diversity and remains firmly committed to ensuring equitable representation and access in all national education initiatives,” it added.
The Ministry also indicated its readiness to continue engaging with stakeholders, traditional authorities and local communities as Ghana moves towards a more inclusive, technology-driven education system.
The statement was signed by Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Minister for Education.
