Minority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has predicted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is likely to have a messy flagbearer race because leading figures are already crisscrossing the country in campaign tour.

He said unfolding issues could cause a massive shake-up in the NDC and leave cracks.

The Minority Leader wants the NDC to focus on what lies ahead of them and stop commentaries on the NPP’s January 31 primary.

“The NDC is busy talking about us. what they have also forgotten is that they also have a leadership contest awaiting them. When it is not your turn, you say someone’s house is on fire.

“Theirs is even worse. Now Asiedu Nketia says he is going on tour, meanwhile he is campaigning. What we are observing is government has its own candidate from the Jubilee House and the party also has their candidate. So it will get to their turn.

“NDC should think about themselves and focus on their party. And if care is not taken President Mahama will before the year end become a lame duck President because everybody around him wants power,” Afenyo-Markin noted at a press conference on Monday, January 26, 2026.

He added: “NDC’s flagbearer race will be scary. So they should focus on that and leave matters concerning the NPP.”

With President Mahama’s final term in office, the party is expected to front a new face for its presidential bid in the next elections. Already, names of bigwigs in the party have emerged including Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu.

It is anticipated that the party will face turmoil in electing its next flagbearer because of the current leading figures that have emerged.

However, other members of the party have objected to this position, noting that the party will see a seamless and successful flagbearer race with no turmoil.
