The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declined a request by Hajia Amina Adam, wife of the late Ayawaso East MP Nasser Toure Mahama for a virtual vetting.
According to the Deputy Director of Elections for the NDC, Rashid Tanko Computer, the request letter was submitted on Tuesday, January 27 by representatives of Hajia Amina who raised concerns that the late MP’s wife is mourning and would prefer her vetting to be conducted online.
The party has scheduled Wednesday, January 28, 2026 as date for vetting of the five aspirants.
Tanko Computer disclosed on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Tuesday, that the Committee denied the request, insisting that the candidate must be present for her vetting. He noted that Hajia Amina’s mourning state does not preclude her from partaking in a physical vetting.
He clarified that the party can only make an exception for candidates outside the country who have extreme difficulty in travelling to Ghana to be physically present for the vetting.
“Indeed, the party leadership received request from the camp of Hajia Amina this afternoon (Tuesday) requesting a virtual vetting. The letter came, we discussed it thoroughly and we compared it to our previous activities and performance of the party when it comes to matters of this nature.
“Our position has been very clear in matters of this nature. It is only a candidate who is outside this country and then finding it extremely difficult to come down to participate in vetting. So, it is only that one that we give that kind of reverence to but all candidates in the country are denied such privilege of going through virtual vetting, we have never done it before,” he remarked.
He said the party has rejected similar requests in the past and has its ground rules as a political party.
He further stressed that the party took the decision not to grant the request in order not to create a precedent for candidates in the future.
“We don’t want to create another precedent that others can just rely on it and say Function executive has varied its decisions of matters of this nature so therefore I can also apply for the opportunity to also do virtual vetting,” he added.
The NDC primaries has been slated for February 7, 2026 while the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will conduct the parliamentary by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
