Popular Ghanaian travel content creator, Wode Maya has sparked widespread discussion on social media after calling for economic independence among citizens.

In a post shared on X on February 2, 2026, the YouTuber and influencer prayed for Ghanaians to have the ability to earn their own income without political dependence.

“May God bless us with the ability to earn our own income so we never have to defend politicians for our daily bread,” he wrote.

The comment quickly went viral, drawing reactions from supporters who praised the message as a call for self-reliance, while others interpreted it as a critique of partisan loyalty driven by financial gain.

Wode Maya’s remarks come against the backdrop of growing concerns over the activities of online political “foot soldiers,” individuals who are often accused of defending political parties and public figures on social media platforms in exchange for payment.

The phenomenon has been widely criticised for contributing to toxic political discourse, misinformation, and deepening partisan divisions in the digital space.

Wode Maya’s post brings to mind the economic hardship, youth unemployment and the pressures that drive citizens into partisan online battles for monies from politicians.
