The President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons, has urged the public not to make an issue out of the union’s GHC500 donation at the one-week observance of late gospel legend Yaw Sarpong.
According to him, the focus should remain on preserving the legacy of the celebrated musician rather than creating unnecessary controversy.
Speaking on Showbiz 360 with Giovani Caleb, Bessa Simons described the one-week observance as “very beautiful and brilliant,” stressing that the solemnity and dignity of the occasion must be maintained.
He explained that MUSIGA does not typically make donations during one-week observances, as the union’s financial support is usually reserved for the main funeral rites.
The MUSIGA President further revealed that beyond public donations, the union undertakes several efforts behind the scenes to ensure Ghana’s music legends are given grand and befitting funerals.
“We do so many things behind the scenes. When you look down the line—from C.K. Mann, Paapa Yankson, Jewel Ackah—we push to ensure that our legends are honoured and given befitting burials,” he said.

He also disclosed that just last week, MUSIGA’s leadership accompanied Yaw Sarpong’s family to meet a sector minister and formally wrote to the government to seek state support in recognition of the late musician’s immense contribution to the growth of Ghana’s music industry.
