Head of Legal Affairs for the United Party (UP), Andrew Appiah Danquah, has berated the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as its “negative and parochial political culture” in running the State.

According to him, the “lack of commitment” on the part of the previous government led by William Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led to the failure of many of the policies it implemented.

Appiah Danquah says President Akufo-Addo’s admission that the next leader was going to fix the economy was an indication that he failed woefully in his leadership.

Speaking on the BigIssue segment on the NewDay morning show on TV3 Monday, March 2, 2026, he said the NPP need not blame its mismanagement of the economy on external shocks, but rather due to the poor decision that were made by the government of the day.

“Nana Addo in the last super delegates conference said the leader after him was going to fix the economy he Nana Addo had destroyed,” he said.

“There were terrible fiscal decisions made under his watch that weakened the ability of Ghana to withstand the external shocks,” the former member of the NPP noted.

His comments came after former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, argued that the NPP administration faced external shocks like the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, which made things difficult for them.

However, Appiah-Danquah said the abysmal performance of the erstwhile government was solely due to incompetence, which led to the economy being mismanaged.

He questioned how the then government misplaced its priorities by investing more in unproductive policies while initiatives that were supposed to be transformational were given little attention.

He noted that the then government’s commitment to the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) for instance, compared to its flagship One-District One-Factory (1D1F) tells how the Akufo-Addo administration “criminally managed” the economy.

“How can you justify why a government will spend just GHC400 million on the policy that was meant to be their most transformational policy –1D1F –and spend about GHC5 billion on NABCO? What was the contribution of NABCO to our GDP?” he quizzed.

The conversation stemmed from the State of the Nation Address (SoNA) delivered by President John Dramani Mahama in Parliament on Friday, February 27, 2026.
