The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johson Asiedu Nketia, has said that the government will continue to appoint public officials based on competence.

Mr Nketia noted that the NDC believes all Ghanaians deserve to be appointed to serve the nation no matter their tribe.

“Every Ghanaians is a Ghanaian. So, we appoint based on competence not where you come from,” the NDC’s National Chairman said during his ‘Thank You Tour’ of Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region on April 13.

Mr Nketia was reacting to allegations by some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members within the region to the effect that the NDC has betrayed Asantes by appointing a non-Asante as a District Chief Executive.

According to Mr Nketia, “Whether you are Ibrahim, Kofi or Mamprusi or Asante, it does not matter. It is what you are capable of doing that we consider.”

He used the opportunity to thank party faithful in the Constituency for their hard work which resulted in a good showing during the December 7, 2024 elections.

“I was here to campaign for our presidential and parliamentary candidates and you voted for us. So, the reason why I am here today is to thank all the people of Asawase for voting massively for us in the December 2024 elections.

We know that NPP cannot win the Asawase seat. And we are grateful for your support. We also asked for your challenges and you told us. We will let our secretary inform you about the progress we have made so far in terms of the promises we made to you. Obviously, we have done more in one year, than the NPP did in 8 years,” he said.

He urged members of the party who feel slighted in relation to appointments to be patient.

“When we took over, this economy was in bad shape. We have revived the economy. Unfortunately, some party faithful are complaining about not being catered for. We are aware of your concerns. We are pleading with you to be patient. We want to satisfy Ghanaians in general before we cater for party faithful. After that you will all be taken care of. So, I urge all of you to be patient,” he pleaded.

Mr Nketia lauded President Mahama’s directive to his appointees to continue all projects commenced by the previous administration.

“Some NPP supporters are saying that the Ashanti Regional Minister has not initiated any project since he assumed duty. That the projects he is supervising currently were initiated by the NPP government. I want to tell them that this government has decided, per President Mahama’s directive, to continue all abandoned projects and those initiated by the previous government. This is because it is taxpayers’ money that was used to finance them,” Mr Nketia stated.

He urged the party members to expose persons who are not loyal to the party.

“Those who claim to be NDC by day and NPP by night would not be tolerated in the party. They are hypocrites. Let’s not entertain them in the party,” Mr Nketia urged.
