The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that government is engaging South African authorities following reports of xenophobic attacks against Ghanaians and other Africans.

In a statement issued on Facebook, April 22, 2026, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said he has held telephone conversation with his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, over viral videos showing disturbing attacks against Ghanaians and other nationals in South Africa.

According to the Ministry, the South African Minister has expressed sympathy for the victims and assured that full-scale investigations would be conducted into the incidents.

He also indicated that the South African government would hold a briefing with African ambassadors today, Wednesday, April 22 to address the situation.

The Ministry further disclosed that he has been in constant contact with Ghana’s High Commissioner in South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, to coordinate a response and provide support to affected nationals.

He further confirmed that the main victim captured in one of the widely circulated videos has been identified and is receiving consular assistance.

The individual is reported to be in stable condition.

The Ministry emphasised that no Ghanaian life has been lost in the incidents so far and called on the public to remain calm and confident in the government’s efforts to ensure the safety of citizens abroad.

“I am also able to confirm that since yesterday, I have been in constant contact with Ghana’s High Commissioner in South Africa, His Excellency Benjamin Quarshie, coordinating our response.

“I am gladdened that so far colleagues in our diplomatic mission have located the main victim in the viral video and are offering consular assistance. He is doing very well. No Ghanaian life has been lost. We urge calm and confidence in our collective capacity to protect Ghanaians,” the Minister wrote.

Reaffirming government’s commitment, the Ministry assured that the protection and welfare of Ghanaians, both at home and overseas, remains a top priority.

Ablakwa called for unity among African countries, urging that isolated acts of violence should not undermine the broader spirit of Pan-African solidarity.

“May these regrettable incidents never quench our Pan-African love and solidarity for each other. The overwhelming majority of Africans are united and share an unbreakable bond – we shall not be divided by the hatred of a few fringe elements,” he added.
